About Akinyi

Welcome to Akinyi

We believe in handcrafted clothing & accessories to boost your confidence. Each piece is unique and a limited edition. So, join us in our mission for individual style and slow fashion, one crochet stitch at a time!

We are dedicated to empowering young women. By supporting us, you are helping to generate the income of our crocheters, sewers and models in Kenya besides sustaining the business overall.

On that note...

please have in mind that we are a small business of handmade products. Therefore, on occasions, response time can be a bit longer.

Delivering your piece to you takes us 3 to 5 weeks. The exact time depends on the piece you order, yarn availability, and your delivery location.

Treat your Piece

Wash your piece only when truly necessary to preserve its shape and radiant color!

  1. Preferably hand wash: Fill a sink with lukewarm water and mild detergent, and gently swish the item avoiding twisting or wringing.

  2. Machine wash with lots of caution: Use a gentle cycle and cold or warm water, avoiding hot water to prevent shrinking or damage.

  3. Dry flat: Lay cotton crochet pieces flat to dry, avoiding hanging to maintain their shape.

  4. Use minimal fabric conditioner: Avoid using excessive fabric conditioner to prevent stiffness and maintain softness.

Materials

We source all our yarns locally in Kenya through Osona Yarns, In Stitches, and secondhand finds. Some are produced in Kenya, some are imported.

Organic Cotton

Made from pesticide-free cotton grown using natural methods and substances, promoting environmental sustainability and soil fertility.
Processed without toxic chemicals, using azo-free sustainable dyes and chlorine-free bleaching, ensuring natural and eco-friendly production. Feels fresh on the skin, absorbs sweat and doesn’t itch.

Currently, cotton is not grown commercially in Kenya, so the raw fibre is imported. However, the main organic cotton yarn brand we use is Kenyan.

Milk Fibre

Some of our yarns also contain milk fibre. Milk protein fibre is made from milk casein, a byproduct of the dairy industry. A soft, cotton-like texture and feel that can also keep you warm in the cold.

These yarns are partly sourced from Kenyan producers and partly imported.

Acrylic

Acrylic yarn is a synthetic fibre known for being lightweight, affordable, and easy to care for. It’s machine-washable and holds its colour well, though it is less breathable than natural fibres and not biodegradable.

Most of the acrylic yarn we use is produced entirely in Kenya.

Leather & Metal

Our belts are made from locally sourced leather in Kenya, handcrafted by our supplier in Kisumu using traditional leather carving techniques. The carved leather we then handmake into belts in Germany. Metal hardware such as adjusters and hooks we source from German suppliers.
